--Francis Cardinal George, former Roman Catholic Archbishop of Chicago. Mahler Symphony No. by some guy » Sat Jun 23, 2007 8:27 am, Post The VPO recordings have the best SQ in the cycle probably due to the sonics of the wonderful Musikveiren and the recording techniques used. As a result, he produced a recording of Mahler 8 with, perhaps, the best singing of this difficult music. Still, his rather dim view of life has produced some incredible music. The cycle used performances by the New York Philharmoni… The 5th is probably the weakest, but all in all classics for sure. Love it but it's never been my absolute favorite. But Tennstedt's readings are outstanding and the Kubelik set is very worse having. Put together your best cycle of recordings of Mahler symphonies 1-10 & Das Lied-but conducted by those from Mahlers time-Let's say born 1899 or before. This Mahler cycle has had a checkered history on disc. It's a different take on Mahler. by Sergeant Rock » Tue Jun 26, 2007 9:53 am, Post This is because the Second encapsulates all of Mahler and what he sought to achieve with his symphonies, and is rightfully one of the greatest compositions ever. Post by Donaldopato » Fri Jun 22, 2007 12:18 pm, Post Gielen’s Mahler cycle, when it eventually came, was stunning, and this recording of the Fifth is typical of it. by Mark Preece » Sat Jun 23, 2007 1:50 am, Post I have had a lot of respect for Bernstein/NYP as well. by C.B. by Lance » Mon Jun 25, 2007 5:18 pm, Post I'd like to thank everyone for their responses, some of which are quite interesting. ↳ ARCHIVED: Classical Music Chatterbox May 2006 to Feb 26 2007, ↳ ARCHIVED: Corner Pub May 2006 to Feb 26 2007, ↳ ARCHIVED: Classical Music Chatterbox August 2005 to May 31, 2006, ↳ ARCHIVED: Corner Pub August 2005 to May 31, 2006, ↳ ARCHIVED Classical Music Chatterbox March-August 05, The absolute best Mahler Symphony Cycle (boxed set), http://www.davidstuff.com/political/wmdquotes.htm, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pbp0hur ... re=related, http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/alb ... m_id=56918, http://members.sibeliusmusic.com/markpreece, http://members.tripod.com/~Karl_P_Henning/, http://www.musicweb-international.com/Mahler/index.html. For my money the three greatest Mahler conductors of the 20th century were Barbirolli, Horenstein and Scherchen. The "Resurrection" Symphony (No. by Lance » Thu Jun 21, 2007 8:00 pm, Post Kubelik is Mahler-lite...and generally too fast. by Donaldopato » Thu Jun 21, 2007 11:40 pm, Post A fabulous performance , and one of the best performances of his second Mahler cycle, it has also been reissued as part of DG's cheap Leonard Bernstein Edition. I don't know that I'd recommend the set, but he does do some things very well, like the eighth and the fourth (my two least favorites). As has often been mentioned on these boards, it's best to approach Mahler symphonies on an individual basis rather than through box sets. Would love to find a clean copy of the Barbirolli on vinyl. Let me add for good measure three cycles which I think are omitted from the list without proper consultation. Abbado's earlier Mahler cycle comprises a relatively expensive box set, but I do like it, especially M1, M3, M7. You've left my favorite off the list: The Bernstein DG set. I'd have to go with Bernstein if forced to choose just one set. This is the finest of the post-Bernstein I Mahler cycles. There are glories in some of the other sets, too, and individual performances. Log in or register to post comments; Barbirolli is the Rosette. No. Zubin Mehta + VPO is a classic recommendation for Mahler 2. Segerstam's cycle emphasizes Mahler as a gifted composer, one with great gifts for melody, orchestral color, drama and humor. Perhaps few people collect the integrated editions. by Chalkperson » Fri Jun 22, 2007 1:35 pm, Post by ch1525 » Wed Jun 27, 2007 12:05 am, Post Mahler was a firm believer that in order to truly appreciate life, one has to suffer its worst aspects. I'm surprised Kubelik hasn't received one vote as yet. Nevertheless, that performance earned Mahler the best reviews of his career (and reportedly a very lengthy standing ovation at its conclusion). Bernstein's first Mahler cycle was the first (of now many) complete Mahler cycles with symphonies 1-9 recorded between 1960 and 1967 on the CBS (now Sony) label. by Barry » Sat Jun 23, 2007 10:42 am, Post The rest of the symphonies not mentioned could go into any of the boxes you mention. by niper » Mon Jul 02, 2007 9:11 am, Post As a composer he acted as a bridge between the 19th century Austro-German tradition and the modernism of the early 20th century. Its life cycle is closely tied to its amazing migration. We are honored to be given the chance to serve the cycling needs of Glenview, IL. » Tue Jun 26, 2007 10:45 am, Post Also recommended--Eliahu Inbal and Frankfort Radio Symphony. Best Regards. Your 'hot spot' for all classical music subjects. Haitink is a long-time favorite. Finally, I listened to them, and I think his may be the one of the most consistent sets. I have been reading a lot about different Mahler cycles, and I would like to also get some feedback from you as well. Also feel free to add another cycle that may not be included here with your explanation as well. This is most recommendable and all the more surprising for a very recent recording when the competition is so great. by CharmNewton » Thu Jun 21, 2007 8:43 pm, Post Welcome to the new Classical Music Guide Online Forums! by Mark Preece » Thu Jul 12, 2007 1:47 am, Users browsing this forum: No registered users and 40 guests. 2: Simon Rattle, City of Birmingham Symphony (EMI) No. 1 Walter 2 Scherchen 3 can't think of any oldies I really like 4 Mengelberg 5 Walter 6 Mitropoulos 7 same as 3 8 don't like it whenever or by whomever recorded 9 Walter DLvDE Jochum by jserraglio » Sat Jun 23, 2007 5:48 am, Post "The public has got to stay in touch with the music of its time . "The Mahler Broadcasts 1948-1982" is a lavish twelve-disc collection containing "live" New York Philharmonic performances - effectively an NYPO Mahler cycle. Inspired by the breakdown of a relationship with a young soprano, Mahler's Songs of a Wayfarer are beautifully emotive, if not too cheery. Hi Mark, and welcome to the boards. by pizza » Mon Jul 02, 2007 10:10 am, Post by pizza » Tue Jun 26, 2007 11:22 am, Post by Mark Preece » Thu Jun 21, 2007 6:04 pm, Post With the shortest of the nine symphonies lasting just under an hour and the longest nearly two, they take a lot of listening. Lipton; Choir of the Transfiguration; NYPO / Leonard Bernstein. His Mahler 9 in Lucerne is probably the best Mahler performance I have ever seen / heard. Certainly not the "best" set, but one of historical importance and very much worth hearing is the first complete cycle recorded with a single orchestra; Abravanel/Utah SO on Vanguard, if it can still be found. by Heck148 » Fri Jun 22, 2007 8:45 am, Post Add to that the voice of Marilyn Horne and Adolph Herseth, flugelhorn, and you get something very special, indeed, at least for me. The first Bernstein is a must-own for any true Mahlerite but I prefer his DG cycle. But I hope the list will serve as a rough guide to anyone traversing the Mahler mountain range for the first time. It marries, to an extraordinary extent, intensity of feeling with a total absence of the cheap schmaltz and self-indulgence that too many Mahler performances tip into when they try to be explicitly emotional. "Take only pictures, leave only footprints" - John Muir. For me, it's next to impossible to select one set (though I chose Haitink). Mahler had a 4 symphony cycle that went: very good, great, so-so, flawed. by david johnson » Sat Jun 23, 2007 5:22 am, Post No single conductor has all the answers, and although the effort to select recordings based upon individual performances by many different interpreters is obviously more difficult and time consuming, the dividends paid by that process are substantial, well worth the effort and in the final analysis, more rewarding. But each symphony has had special interpretations that surpass even the complete sets. I’ve even read customer reviews of his Mahler Symphony cycle, previously issued by SWR (but with only the “Adagio” from the 10th Symphony, not the whole work) complaining that Gielen was a “cool” interpreter of Mahler, whereas in hearing this complete set I find him among the most exciting and detailed of Mahler conductors. His recording of the Sixth Symphony from that cycle remains unequaled for me. by Chalkperson » Mon Jun 25, 2007 1:32 pm, Post by pizza » Tue Jun 26, 2007 2:43 pm, Post by walboi » Tue Jun 26, 2007 12:03 pm, Post Come on in and check out our top quality bikes and gear from Giant Bicycles and other top brands. Mahler symphony cycle; the complete Mozart piano concer-tos; high-quality opera performances, including Mozart in the Martin; a deep concentration on the music of the Russian masters; and his hallmark “Breaking the Silence” series, which turned our attention back toward the music plunged into obscu-rity by the Holocaust. . (Who IS that guy, we'd laugh!) by pizza » Mon Jun 25, 2007 1:22 pm, Post Although they were not the first recordings of the individual symphonies, Bernstein's advocacy was an important part of the Mahler boom of the 1960s (especially in the US) and helped increase the popularity of the less commonly played symphonies like the third, sixth, and seventh. My other option would be the 1988 LPO/Tennstedt (EMI) recorded live in the Royal Festival Hall at Tennstedt's 'comeback' concert after a bout of treatment for cancer.
