050 – Wednesday Box Alarm – “People don’t listen to robots”

From a quote by Jocko Willink in his book “Extreme Ownership”, Nick takes a quick five minutes or so to explain how the quote applies to leadership in the fire service. Leaders must control their emotions and their adrenaline when giving assignments and speaking with their members. At the same time, however, we need to learn to not be robots. “People don’t listen to robots”.

047 – How is your Attitude?

This episode hits on a few places where attitude in the fire department needs to be addressed. It is easy to get wrapped up in the negative attitudes around the fire station. Especially as firefighters, we are constantly exposed to tragic situations. One of our biggest goals in the volunteer and on-call fire service is firefighter retention. We need to be focusing on how to make sure our members that we have right now won’t walk away from our organization. A lot of it comes down to attitude.

If you have never heard of the FOOLS, which stands for the Fraternal Order Of Leatherheads Society, you’ll certainly want to listen to this show. We discuss the history of the FOOLS, how to join, how to participate in training opportunities and the benefits of joining.

We also get Rusty’s take on what it takes to maintain a successful volunteer, on-call or per-diem Fire Department.

Be sure to check out the New England FOOLS at www.nefools.org and the FOOLS International site at www.foolsinternational.com

We snapped a quick photo before going in to record. Behind us is South Berwick, Maine’s retired 1980 Ford/Pierce that was purchased by a group of members of their organization. Hamel was dared to bring it to the house.
