068 – Wednesday Box Alarm – Just Shut the Road Down

This week’s Wednesday Box Alarm comes on the heals of a recent incident involving traffic and fresh snow. Not all of you listening to this podcast have to deal with snow and busy roads, but you may get some value out of this anyway. We need to be keeping out heads on a swivel and giving ourselves a safe space to work at all traffic related incidents, but even more so during snow or rain conditions.

067 – Rand, WV Fire Department with Roggie Seldon

This week’s full length episode is a few days late, but Nick Hilton was able to secure an interview with a long-time listener of the show. Roggie Seldon of the Rand, WV Volunteer Fire Department was one of our first listeners to present a question for the BAR Boys to answer in one of our earlier episodes. Today, Nick and Roggie were able to have an hour conversation about the Rand Fire Department, Roggie’s family history in the fire service and how the fire service should be working together no matter what status you are in the fire service.

Firefighting is not black and white

There is no question that Social Media has made our world a lot smaller. It has become a powerful tool for every industry in the world, and without a doubt the Fire Service is included in that.  Social media has connected firefighter in ways that could have never happened before. Building relationships is what will make the brotherhood and sisterhood stronger. In my opinion, that’s something that is truly needed.

064 – Wednesday Box Alarm – Proper Representation

This week’s Wednesday Box Alarm touches up on how we should all be representing our fire departments professionally. As volunteer or on-call Firefighters we tend to be wearing our Fire Department shirts or driving around in our vehicles with Fire Department plates or stickers. Are we doing the best that we can to maintain a good image for our organizations?

What aren’t we doing when it comes to firefighter retention?

As our journey in the Brotherhood Academy Radio podcast continues on, we are seeing more and more stories and articles about fire departments struggling to recruit new members. All throughout the United States and Canada it is becoming a common topic of discussion.  Recruitment is lacking, people don’t want to become involved in their local fire department.  People don’t have the time to dedicate to their community.

063 – What We All Need

This week Nick Hilton gave the rest of the BAR Boys a break. Why? Well because we have all had a long week. But, it was a good week, that included a trip to Framingham, Mass for the National Fire Radio On Tap event, hosted in partnership with the New England FOOLS. We all had a fantastic time with other brother and sister firefighters from all over. It got us thinking about this week’s topic, which is something we all need. Initiative within the fire service plays a critical part in retention and boosting our membership numbers. Listen to Nick give his thoughts in this week’s full length episode.

062 – Wednesday Box Alarm – Coming Together

This week’s Wednesday Box Alarm is a quick one. Recorded before the BAR Boys went down to Framingham, MA to the National Fire Radio/New England FOOLS On-Tap event. The event has turned from a round-table event to a fundraiser for Worcester, MA Lt. Menard’s family. Here Nick Hilton discusses how awesome it is to see the fire service community come together for a family that is going through hell.

061 – Today’s Public Outreach with Probationary FF Shannan Sharp

This week we sat down with Probationary Firefighter Shannan Sharp. Shannan joined the fire service in August of 2019 and wanted to come on the show to talk about something that every volunteer or on-call fire department should be doing. Public outreach and information about what our members do for the community seems to be lacking in a lot of places. Listen to this episode as we listen to a new member’s perspective. We end up empowering this brand new member to use the talents she already has for the better of our organization. Lead. Empower. Win.
