025 – Recruiting and Retaining Females

This week we sat down with Firefighter Nicole Richard of the York Village, ME Fire Department. The four of us shared some laughs and discussed what the fire service could do to encourage more females to join their local volunteer or on-call fire department. Nicole joined the fire department at the same time as her mother. She discusses the training that she has completed, the confidence that she has gained and how other women shouldn’t be afraid to step up and serve.

024 – Manlius, NY Fire Department

This week Nick Hilton and Nick Hamel have a conversation with Asst. Chief Adam Feck of the Manlius, NY Fire Department. We discussed their unique community based programs that include a youth firefighter camp and an opioid awareness program for youth. Their programs are certainly trend setters and they are hoping to get other fire departments to adopt these programs for themselves.

Manlius Fire Department has a web page with examples of what they are doing for their community. www.manliusfire.com

Adam is also the Director of Sales of I am Responding. At the end of the episode he shares some of the features of IaR and new features being released this summer.

“Golden Ticket” tourist pass – Daniel Gaestel

“Fundraising Idea – We are a tourist town and there are some local hot spots where the lines get to be very long.  One is the bakery, and the other, the ice cream parlor.  We partnered with the two establishments and we raffle off a “Golden Ticket” which gives the winner a “skip the line pass” at each of these establishments for the entire summer season.  We have only been doing this for a few years but it seems each year the raffle entries go up which in turn raises more money each year for our Volunteer Fire Company.  We advertise the raffle in the news paper so the businesses also get free advertising and drive customers to their establishments and in return we keep 100% of the proceeds.”

Young recruits; What are we missing?

Is your fire department membership aging faster than it can recruit?  For a lot of us, we have an increasingly aging membership. Although the wealth of knowledge offered by our senior members is invaluable, we need to be sure we have someone to pass that knowledge down to.  It seems as though the number of young people coming into the volunteer and call fire service has shrunken considerably in the last few decades.

022 – Creating Relationships

The team gets together in Episode 022 to discuss how to create relationships within your Fire Department and outside of your four walls. We aren’t talking about playing match-maker, but how to get on a personal level with your members and firefighters in neighboring towns. Creating relationships is critical for retention and teamwork on and off the fire ground.

Tips for the first arriving firefighter

If you serve in a community that has a large coverage area you may be in the same boat as a lot of us.  Some communities may only one or two fire stations, making response times a challenge. As nice as it would be to have all of our members respond to the station and get on a truck, for some communities it just doesn’t make sense.  For a member to have to drive past a scene to get on a truck that is waiting for them at the station not only delays the truck from responding, but delays any sort of response all together. This isn’t saying all members should be bypassing the station either. There is a balance that each individual fire department needs to figure out to run smoothly.

019 – Firefighter Level Leadership

We have talked a lot about the ins and outs of Leadership at the command staff level. Today, Nick Hilton, Paul Balentine & Nick Hamel sit down and talk about how the Firefighter or aspiring Officer can demonstrate leadership in and around their Fire Department.

It is important to remember that anybody can be a leader. You don’t need to be a ranking officer to lead in your expertise.
